Florentina Holzinger: Sancta

Florentina Holzinger’s works are driven by the notion of identity, sexual and physical discipline. Drawing inspiration as much from Viennese Actionism, body art and bodybuilding as from classical ballet, cabaret and circus; she shifts boundaries between high culture and so-called entertainment culture, and deconstructs the very definition of femininity.

In Sancta (2024), Florentina Holzinger expands her art of transcendence through flesh, reimagining Hindemith’s 1922 libretto Sancta Susanna, in which a nun struggles against the Church’s repression of desire and queer love.
