Timeline of Dance and Protest

This timeline was initially drafted to contextualise and inform Performa Studio curated by Defne Ayas and Kathy Noble for Performa 2025, and developed in collaboration with choreographers Moriah Evans and Isabel Lewis and their invited guests.

The timeline is a work in progress. We warmly invite your additions, corrections, and perspectives. This is a collective, living document. What exists here began with foundational work: RoseLee Goldberg’s pioneering histories of performance; ongoing conversations between peers and co-curator Kathy Noble; research by assistant curator Madeleine Seidel; findings by Taisa B.; and extensive resources from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. It will continue to be cultivated and expanded.
